Local family continues to help the homeless

MCALLEN, Texas – A McAllen family is giving back to the less fortunate in a big way. The Aguirre family are donating to the homeless.

The Aguirre family has been giving back to the homeless for nearly five years, and this weekend they are continuing to give back by hosting a homeless picnic at the Lady of Sorrows School in McAllen where they will be providing them with food and clothing.

“Twice a year, if not three times a year we like to have a picnic for the homeless where we go and pick up the homeless people where they are living, where they are staying at, you know behind whatever store pick them up and bring them here,” Said Rick Aguirre.

This picnic will provide the homeless with clothing, shoes, hygiene products, and medical assessments for those needing to get a check-up. The donations were given by families and members of the community.

Emily Aguirre hopes this picnic inspires and brings confidence to the homeless, “If they get nice and clean it’s like their dignity and I really want them to know that they have a place where they can be and they won’t be judged and all that.”

Earlier this month the Aguirre family was awarded the 2019 Disney and Family Points of Light Volunteer Family of the year, their goal is to inspire others to take chances on the homeless, one meat at a time.

“If everyone would go out and just give a homeless guy one meal, who knows, that may change that person’s life for that day,” Said Rick Aguirre.

The Aguirre family said they will start picking up their homeless friends Saturday morning and take them to the Lady of Sorrows School gym where they will be able to take any items they’d like.
