Lawmakers looking for solution to deported veterans

News

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – A new report found immigration authorities are not following their own rules when dealing with military veterans.

You may recall local veteran Edgar Baltazar, a judge ended the deportation proceedings in part because of his veteran’s status. That’s precisely the type of special considerations ICE is supposed to give veterans.

Right now, ICE doesn’t know how many veterans have been deported. Lawmakers are hoping to find a permanent solution for veterans who aren’t U.S. citizens.

One congress woman says veterans may suffer from PTSD and deserve treatment instead of punishment. “Some of these men and women are committing domestic violence for instance, so making sure we provide them with the services they need to prevent this.” Said Representative Susie Lee.

ICE agreed to more training for officers and agents, and on capitol hill some lawmakers are working to create a permanent solution.
