Edinburg CISD kicks of Back to School celebration


EDINBURG, Texas – More than 5,000 staff members of Edinburg CISD gathered to ring in the new school year at the Bert Ogden Arena. The district is the largest employer in Hidalgo County and this morning’s congregation is an annual tradition. Fine Arts and athletics students putting on a show to help kick off the new school year. The district recognized 43 of their teachers of the year with a parade.

On hand for the festivities was keynote speaker Jose Hernandez. He is a retired astronaut who was part of the space shuttle mission in August of 2009.

“It’s great to be here and share my stories of how the teachers were such a big positive impact in my studies, fulfilling my dreams of becoming an astronaut.” says Hernandez.

This is the districts first time holding the general assembly at the arena. The first day of school for the district wide will be Monday, August 26th.
