DPS seeking leads in 1983 Cold Case

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is asking for the public’s help in solving the 1983 murder of Royal Taylor Cumby Jr., and an increased reward of up to $6,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible if the tip is received before next month’s featured Texas Rangers cold case is announced.

On May 29, 1983, at approximately 7:20 p.m., Cumby was fatally shot at intersection 4 ½ Street and Avenue Q in Santa Fe.

The killer(s) escaped in Cumby’s vehicle, which was later found abandoned in La Marque around 10 p.m.

The motive for this murder has never been determined, and no suspects involved have been identified. The Texas Rangers and the Santa Fe Police Department are working together to solve this crime and bring responsible person(s) to justice.

The Texas Rangers are asking for the public’s help for any information that will lead them to evidence in this case, or information that will help solve this crime.

To be eligible for the cash rewards, tipsters must provide information to authorities by calling the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-TIPS (8477). All tips are anonymous.
