County surpasses registered voter record

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Cameron County is surpassing records of registered voters for the upcoming election season.

For the first time ever the county is getting closer to their goal of 95 percent of eligible voters registered for the 2020 election. So far over 209,000 residents have registered in Cameron County. According to election officials, the increase is part of a joint effort by the Elections Administration Office and community partners.

Remi Garza, Cameron County Elections Administrator, “It’s the highest number we’ve had, every day we’re breaking that historic record. We usually maintain a registration database of about 185,000 to 186,000 registered voters. Four years ago we started a new push in order to get that number up.”

Most registered voters will have their registration automatically renewed every 2 years. Those that move, or submit a change of address would have to register again to participate in the upcoming election.
