Chaos at city commission meeting, four people arrested


MERCEDES, Texas – A regular Mercedes City Commission meeting ends with four residents behind bars.

The residents were taken into custody after disrupting the city meeting last night. The incident stems from two popular items on the agenda that including the removal of a city commissioner after making offensive comments.

Sources tell Local 23 News many residents began complaining about being locked out from the public forum. One local activist and the commissioner in question spoke to Local 23 about last night’s arrests

Israel Coronado, local activist, “If they can remove anyone for no reason whatsoever, the question that everyone should be asking is ‘When am I going to be next?’”

City Commissioner Leonel Benavidez, “You don’t want residents to feel intimidated you know because they speak up in open forum. We don’t want to be shutting the doors on the public.”

The detained were held overnight at the Weslaco City Jail. At this time Mercedes Police is not releasing any information as to what they were arrested for.
