Arson dog on duty on South Padre Island

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas — A new K-9 unit is now in the city of South Padre Island to help firefighters across the south Texas region. His name is ‘Liberty’ and he’s the only active arson dog for the Rio Grande Valley. He’s responsible for finding the source of fires such as gasoline or other sources of ignition. The new arson unit will serve 17 counties south of San Antonio. His current missions include suspected arson sites and fatality fires.

Ashley Bowen, Firefighter/Arson dog handler, “He can go into a fire scene that would take our investigators hours to days to figure out. Where the accelerants are located, and Liberty can go in and in just a few minutes find the accelerants for us and show us right where to collect our samples.”

The money for the four-legged fire fighter comes in a grant from State Farm Insurance. The fire department also plans to have ‘Liberty’ as an ambassador of fire safety that visits local schools.
