American Red Cross aiding flood victims

MERCEDES, Texas — When a disaster strikes the American Red Cross often steps in to provide disaster relief. With recent flooding the organization is lending a helping hand providing shelters for displaced residents.

Carmen Arrata, Interim Executive Director – South Texas Red Cross, “That is our main focus. Have a safe space for people to come if they have been affected.”

Providing emergency shelter, food and clothing is the first priority of the organization.  It’s part of their response, relief and recovery efforts.

Over the next few days the Red Cross will transition into relief efforts. Working with emergency management in the community as well as putting agents on the ground.

“Looking where the damage is at, we are getting all that information and having the bigger picture then we start giving services to those communities in those areas.” says Arrata.

Chester Jordan with the Beaumont-Port Arthur Red Cross chapter says the organization is also assisting with spiritual and mental health issues. They recognize the stress some individual face after a disaster.

If the Red Cross is unable to assist residents with their needs, representatives say they have other partners who may be able to step in to help.

Arrata adds, “We work with other organizations. We are always in contact to see who can provide what other services and so we will be able to provide those referrals.”

As the Red Cross transitions from response to relief efforts the agency says it is in need of volunteers. If you would like to volunteer with the red cross head on over to
