RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The acting Secretary of Homeland Security, Kevin McAleenan, has resigned.
President Donald Trump said in a tweet that McAleenan was stepping down.
In his tweet, the president congratulated McAleenan on a “Job well done.”
A former DHS official close to McAleenan said he resigned on his own and was not forced out.
McAleenan took over the department after Kirstjen Nielsen in April.
In his own tweet, McAleenan thanked the president for the “opportunity to serve alongside the men and women of the Department of Homeland Security.”
Sources say his departure has nothing to do with the scandal over President Trump and Ukraine.
