100 Senior citizens taking part in mile walk

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Around 100 elders are taking part in a one mile walk. Lupita’s Adult Daycare and Cigna Healthspring teamed up to get their seniors up and moving. For seniors, it can be hard to regularly get moving like when they were younger. For many, health risks can keep them from exercising.

Vanessa Garcia, Lupita’s Adult Daycare secretary, “More than anything it’s just trying to get people moving instead of just being at home sitting down. Just to get started somewhere.”

Every step is earned and everyone participating in the walk has been training for months. Even for non-joggers, stretching those muscles is just as important.

Cigna advisor David Rojas stresses the importance of physical activity. “I read in the news that Brownsville was the unhealthiest city in the United States. In an effort to get people out and more active I know physical activity is the best medicine.”

The seniors walked at their own pace and in the end everyone is earning a medal. This one mile walk was such a success that they are planning on doing it every year to get their seniors to incorporate exercise into their daily routine.

This was the first annual senior mile walk and they are hoping to partner with more adult daycare centers in the future.
