It's expected that 600 jobs will come into Brownsville if we're awarded the Space X launch pad that we're in the running for.

News Center 23's Na'Tassia Finley has more in depth on how the aerospace industry could help to potentially bring down the high unemployment rate here in Cameron County and what the Texas Workforce Solution is offering to entice the company to locate here.

"Anybody that has anything to do with the quality of education and building a high quality workforce is going to be interested and heavily supporting a Space X location in Brownsville," says Texas Workforce Solutions- Cameron County, Pat Hobbs.

The Texas Workforce Commission and our local chapter, Texas Workforce Solutions Cameron County are all over the idea of bringing the industry to this community.

"This would be a whole new set of jobs that weren't in our system before," says Hobbs.

The unemployment rate in Cameron County is slightly over 11-percent as of now, the possibility of new jobs means the possibility of the unemployment rate dropping.

But it won't come without getting the available working population trained up.

Through the entire negotiations process several entities in Texas and in Brownsville are proposing incentives to lure the aerospace company to our community over the other to that we're up against, Florida and Puerto Rico.

As of now the Texas Workforce Commission has promised up a specific dollar amount towards a skills development fund, to Space X, that will go towards directly training individuals for Space X specific jobs.

"You tell me what the skills sets are for a certain job and we will go to the community colleges and the technical colleges in Harlingen and build a curriculum and we will have those workers available to you by the time you crank up," says Hobbs.

Hobbs also adds the future job opportunities go beyond just the Space X launch site.

"Not only the construction of the pads and the launch site and the control center but all the support agencies that the business will support the activity that will be located here, will just be another economy upgrade," says Hobbs.

Space X is expected to make a decision on the location site by the end of this year.
