#5: NBA Invades the Dodge
The Rockets and Celtics made basketball history by playing in Hidalgo as an NBA pre-season meeting. The Rockets won 96-90.

#4: Swine Flu Scramble
The UIL caused a frenzy following the cancellation of many high school athletic events state wide (in response to the swine flu outbreak). Some teams lost precious practice time before the baseball/softball playoffs and some runners rode a roller coaster of emotions (meet cancellations and reversals). Even the Bravos franchise home opener was post-poned.

#3: Overcoming Drug Abuse
A pair of Mercedes star athletes admit to drug and alcohol use in 2008. Both fought the overcome the abuse and addiction and found prosperity in 2009. Trevino hopes to run track in college, while Chavez was a standout on the high school gridiron and has a chance to play at the next level.

#2: Hidalgo Ups and Downs
Hidalgo athletics began 2009 with girls basketball reaching the state's final four and boys soccer winning the state championship. In mid-November, the UIL placed Hidalgo athletics on a two-year probation for breaking recruiting and practice regulations.
