Lady Broncs Open Conference with 3-0 Win over South Dakota
The Lady Broncs (3-8, 1-0) couldn’t have asked for a better conference start than a 3-0 win over Great West Conference foe South Dakota (3-9, 0-1) this Thursday (Sept. 17) afternoon in Vermillion, South Dakota.
“This is a tough trip and I am really proud of the team for staying focused and getting the job done,” said head coach Angela Hubbard.
“The energy was great and we responded well. Now we have to stay focused and get ready for UND on Saturday.”
All three sets were close sets for the Lady Broncs, but they were able to pull away with 25-23, 25-22, 25-19 wins.
UTPA was able to win the first set after an 8-2 run at the end of the set securing their first win of the night. Back-to-back kills from Kaitlin Vasquez put the Lady Broncs back into contention tying the score at 22, but a kill by Sarah Davis led the way for the win.
The Lady Broncs were able to carry-on their momentum to the second and third set as they held a strong lead throughout the second set and came from behind in the third.
As South Dakota held a three point lead on the Lady Broncs in the third set, kills by Kaitlin Vasquez and Noelle Mayor along with an attack error by Kimberlee Bulaga set the path for UTPA. Another 8-2 run for the Lady Broncs put the Lady Broncs with five point lead (18-13) over South Dakota.
Senior Noelle Mayor finished the night with 6 kills, 9 assists and 2 blocks while Kaitlin Vasquez added 8 kills, 2 assists, 12 digs and 2 blocks. Rebecca Toddy added 14 digs en route in attempting to tie the program’s record in digs.
South Dakota’s Kristin Kritenbrink finished the conference opener with 15 kills, 5 digs and 3 blocks.
The Lady Broncs continue their conference play as they head to Grand Forks, ND to face North Dakota this Saturday (Sept. 19) at 7:00 p.m.
