Broncs Announce 2009-10 Men’s Basketball Schedule

EDINBURG—The University of Texas-Pan American Basketball program will host 10 games at the UTPA Field House in the 2009-2010 season and play on the road on 19 occasions according to the schedule released today (Sept. 14).

“Our schedule is tremendously competitive, we have eight of what we consider power conference teams, Missouri, Texas, Nebraska, Mississippi State, Northwestern, Virginia, TCU and Air Force,” said head coach Ryan Marks. “If we are able to keep a good mentality through the difficult part of the season then we should be well prepared to compete in our conference (Great West) when we get to January and February.”

The Broncs will have two exhibition home games Nov. 7 and 14 against Saint Edwards and Texas A&M Invitational, both at 7 p.m.

To officially kick-off the season, the Broncs welcome Louisiana Tech Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. before going on a four-week tour from Nov. 16 to Dec. 15 which begins by visiting Beaumont, Texas to play Lamar and face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

From Nov 22-28, the team participates in the South Padre Invitational, facing Missouri State in Columbia Mo. and Mississippi State in Starkville Miss. in the first couple of days, to then return to the Island for the two final games of the tournament. The SPI Invitational is a multiple site tournament.

After the South Padre Invitational, the team travels to Lincoln Neb. to play against the University of Nebraska, and returns to Texas to encounter Texas State, UT San Antonio and Texas in their respective courts Dec. 5, 7 and 15.

The Broncs come back home for a match against UT San Antonio Dec .18 at 7 p.m., go to Ruston La. for a game against Louisiana Tech Dec. 22 and then receive Northern Arizona at UTPA Dec. 28 at 2 p.m.

UTPA will start the road hitting the road to Colorado Springs Colo. for a game against the Air Force Academy Jan. 2, travel to Charlottesville, Va. Jan. 5 to face the University of Virginia, and then visit Northwestern University at Evanston Ill. Jan. 7.

To start conference activity, UTPA welcomes NJIT Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. and Chicago State Jan. 16 at the same time before traveling to Forth Worth to meet TCU Jan. 20.
The program remains home for a week as they wait for TAMUCC (Jan. 25), North Dakota (Jan. 28) and South Dakota (Jan. 30) playing all games at 7 p.m.

The Broncs then go to Orem, Utah for a game against Utah Valley Feb. 4 and to Chicago, Ill. to play Chicago State two days later.

To close the home campaign, UTPA has a game against Houston Baptist at 7 p.m. three days before facing Utah Valley Feb. 13, also at 7 p.m.

NJIT receives UTPA at Newark N.J. Feb. 20. After seven days of rest, the Broncs visit Houston Baptist Feb. 27 to then travel up north to the Dakotas to face the University of South Dakota March 4 and the University of North Dakota March 6.

The Broncs wrap up the season on a trip to Orem, Utah for the Great West Conference Championship March 10-12.


Lady Broncs to face big teams in the 2009-10 campaign

EDINBURG—The Lady Broncs prepare for a busy 2009-2010 campaign as the University of Texas-Pan American Women’s Basketball program announced the schedule for the upcoming season. All home games will take place at the UTPA Field House.

“The schedule is extremely tough, we have 16 road games and we have 12 home games, so I think it kind of puts us behind the eight ball,” said head coach Denny Downing. “We are playing three big-twelve teams on the road; Baylor is probably going to be top 10 in the country, Oklahoma State and Missouri.”

The adventure begins for the Lady Broncs Nov. 13, when they travel to Tulsa, OK. to face Oral Roberts University five days before visiting Houston to play against Texas Southern.

Long Beach State visits UTPA in the home-season opener Nov. 25. Then, UTPA goes to Denton, Texas for a game with North Texas Nov. 28, followed by the Longwood Tournament that will take place Nov. 28-19 in Farmville, VA.

The Lady Broncs return home for a match against Arkansas Pine Bluff Dec. 1, travel to Houston for the Rice tournament Dec. 4-5, and encounter Missouri at Columbia, MO. Dec. 10.

Two days later, St. Edwards comes to the Valley to oppose UTPA. After a week of rest, the program receives TAMUCC in the UTPA field house.

The team goes on trip to Waco, followed by Stillwater OK. in order to play Waco and Oklahoma State on Dec. 30 and Jan. 2 respectively, returns home to welcome Letourneau Jan. 4, and travel to Corpus Christi two days later before staying home for two weeks.

On Jan. 14, the program receives NJIT and Chicago State visits on Jan.16.
The University of South Dakota will play at UTPA Jan.28 while North Dakota State follows after two days.

Utah Valley welcomes UTPA Feb. 4 in Orem, UT, after Chicago State does the same in Chicago, Ill. on Feb. 6. The Lady Broncs make a stop in Houston for a game against Houston Baptist Feb. 11, and on their way back home after hosting an encounter with Utah Valley at UTPA Feb. 15.

The program goes up north to face NJIT in Newark NJ. Feb 18 before their last home game of the term against Houston Baptist Feb. 27.

In the last stretch of the season, the Lady Broncs face South and North Dakota March 4 and 6 in Vermillion and Grand Forks respectively, and finalize the period March 12-13 in Orem, Utah at the Great West Championship.
