For Immediate Release: November 3, 2009

EDINBURG,TX—The University of Texas-Pan American men's golf program captured the UTPA Golf Classic title this afternoon, Tuesday (Nov. 3), at the Los Lagos Golf Club in Edinburg, Texas.

“We are very excited about winning our home tournament. Armen came through today shooting the team’s best round of the tournament (71) helping our team make up the four strokes we needed to take first place,” said head men’s golf coach Santiago Larrea. “The guys are very excited about this win. I know we will build on this win to take us into the spring season where the schedule is a bit stronger.”

After the first day, the Broncs were in second place behind Houston Baptist. The second and final day was another story, as the Broncs stormed back behind the solid play of the entire team. The Broncs made up the difference (four strokes) and took first place by six strokes.

The Broncs were led by Kevin Kirakossian (Tualatin, OR/Tualatin H.S.) who fired a three-round total of 223, finishing tied for third place. Armen Kirakossian (Portland, OR/Wilson H.S.), Brandon Reyna (Mission, TX/Sharyland H.S.) and Orlando Moreno (Donna, TX/UT-Brownsville) each shot a three-round total of 225, with all three ending tied for fifth place.

High Wongchindawest (Bangkok, Thailand/Heritage Academy) shot a three-round score of 238, placing him tied for 15th place, while teammate Adam Haley shot a 243 for the tournament, which put him tied for 20th place. A.J. Gonzalez (Edcouch,TX/Edcouch-Elsa H.S.) shot a 247 for the tournament landing him in 22nd place.

Women’s Golf Finishes Second at UTPA Golf Classic

The University of Texas-Pan American women’s golf program placed second at the UTPA Golf Classic this Tuesday (Nov. 3) afternoon at the Los Lagos Golf Club in Edinburg, Texas.

“The women went out there on their home course in hopes of capturing the win, but they fell short. This was a reality check for the girls and hopefully it will get us highly prepared for conference,” said Director of Men’s and Women’s Golf Ofelia Lopez.

“Now we know what we are up against and what we have to face. We just need to go out hard from day one so this doesn’t happen again.”

The Lady Broncs concluded the UTPA Golf Classic with four of the women in the top-10. Sophomore Majo Camey was the Lady Broncs top performer as she finished four strokes behind first with a 15-over-par 231 (77-75-79).

Down one spot from yesterday, Sarah Kothny finished with a 22-over-par 238 (79-79-80) for a fifth place finish. Up one spot from yesterday was Haley Hocott, who finished sixth, with a 23-over-par 239 (80-80-79).

Rounding out the top-10 was Rebecca de Leon who finished tied for eighth, alongside Houston Baptist’s Kelsey Lou-Hing, with a 27-over-par 243 (81-84-78). Ashley Estrada placed 23rd as she tallied a three-round score of 320.

Houston Baptist took the tournament title with a three-round score of 941 (310-320-311). UTPA finished 10 strokes back with an overall score of 951 (317-318-316). Chicago State took home a third place finish with a score of 1,003 and North Dakota a fourth place finish with a score of 1,039.

HBU’s Paige Gibson took the individual tournament title as she tallied a three-round score of 227 (74-78-75).

The UTPA Golf Classic concludes the Lady Broncs fall season and will open up the spring at the Islander Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas.
