UTB/TSC vs UTPA Volleyball HIGHLIGHTS!

POSTED: Wednesday, September 2, 2009 - 10:37pm

UPDATED: Thursday, February 25, 2010 - 12:33pm

The UTB/TSC women's volleyball team defeated Rio Grande Valley rival the University of Texas-Pan American 3-0 in a match Wednesday at the UTPA Fieldhouse in Edinburg.

The match was only the second meeting between the teams since the Scorpions joined the NAIA and UTB/TSC's first win in the series. UTB/TSC (6-1) used impressive performances by outside hitters Arelene Arraes Ferreira and Erica Chimak, and middle blocker Valquiria Caboclo to defeat UTPA 25-21, 25-16, 25-22.

Scorpion head volleyball coach Todd Lowery said a win against a NCAA Division I opponent like UTPA shows what his team is capable of this season.

"It shows where we can go this season," Lowery said. "We did a good job playing as a team. We were more in sync than in our previous games. This is a huge win for our program. I know the girls are excited."

Ferreira paced the Scorpions with seven kills and 10 digs against UTPA. Meanwhile, Chimak had eight kills and nine digs and Caboclo added nine kills and seven digs.

UTB/TSC dominated throughout the first set and took a 23-17 lead, but the Broncs battled back to put the score at 23-21. From that point, the Scorpions took control and won the set 25-21.

In the second set, the Scorpions and the Broncs battled back and forth. UTB/TSC controlled much of the set, but never led by more than three points until it took a 16-12 lead. From there, the Scorpions cruised to a 25-16 set victory.

The Broncs came out aggressive in the third set, jumping to a 12-9 lead before the Scorpions went on a 7-1 run, making the score 16-13. The Scorpions and Broncs traded points the remainder of the set and UTB/TSC won 25-22.

Lowery said the Scorpions showed their focus resolve in the match by continually battling back from deficits.

"We stayed strong," Lowery said. "When we did what we're capable of, we played well. We just need to do a better job of not digging holes for ourselves."

UTB/TSC will next play in the Madonna University tournament in Livionia, Mich. The Scorpions will play the University of Windsor at 5 p.m., Friday, September 11 and will continue play against tournament host Madonna University at 7 p.m. that day.
