Scorpions Cruise Past UT-Permian Basin for 12th Straight Victory
Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 8:50 PM - [Volleyball]

ODESSA -- The NAIA's 12th-ranked UTB/TSC women's volleyball team took down another NCAA opponent when the Scorpions blanked The University of Texas of the Permian Basin, 3-1, here Wednesday night.

UTB/TSC won by scores of 25-19, 22-25, 25-18, 25-15 for its 12th straight victory and improve its season record to 15-1. The Falcons, members of the Heartland Conference in NCAA Division II, dropped to 9-13. UTPB, which started the season with an 0-6 record, is 3-1 in the Heartland Conference.

The Scorpions were ranked No. 12 in the nation for the second straight week in the NAIA Coaches Top 25 poll released Tuesday.

"We weren't getting very good touches or blocks in the first two games," Scorpion head coach Todd Lowery said. "They just played just amazing defense; they just dug everything we hit. We made some adjustments after the second game during the 10-minute break, and starting getting touches on the block, and the ball played great defense."

The Scorpions had four players in double figures in kills, led by outside hitter Arlene Ferreira, who had 15 kills in 34 attempts with four errors. Valquiria Caboclo had 14 kills on 29 swings with only two errors for a .414 hitting percentage. Rafaella Dornelas had 13 kills and Judith Boel 10.

Setter Daianarah Bracero had her season high in assists with 49 over four sets, an average of better than 12 each set.

Ferreira led the defensive effort with a season-high 32 digs and added four aces. Boel had 14 digs.

"It was by far and away the best defensive game we've played so far this year," Lowery said. "There was a lot of back and forth long rallies. Arlene played amazing defense, she chased balls into the bleachers and was all over the floor."

Up next for the Scorpions is Wiley College -- expected to be its toughest home opponent at 5 p.m. Friday at the Manuel Garza B. Gymnasium.

The Wildcats are defending Red River Athletic Conference champions and are 9-2 this season. They lead the RRAC with a 4-0 record, one-half game ahead of the Scorpions.

UTB/TSC will also host Jarvis Christian College at 7 p.m. Friday and Texas College at 2 p.m. Saturday.
