SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- UTB/TSC took a giant step toward a strong showing at the NAIA Women's Volleyball National Championship with a 3-0 victory over hometown Morningside College (Iowa) at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena Tuesday night.
With a 2-0 record in Pool D, the Scorpions are guaranteed of playing in the championship bracket Friday among the top 12 teams in the tournament.
UTB/TSC faces its biggest challenge of the year when the Scorpions face the nation's fourth-ranked team, Concordia University (Calif.) at 5:45 p.m. Thursday in its final pool play match.
The Scorpions got outstanding efforts from Arlene Ferreira and Valquiria Caboclo to hold off Morningside and a loud hometown crowd.
"We played with a tone of heart and got a good night from everybody," Scorpion head coach Todd Lowery said. "Everybody contributed tonight. Arlene was super tonight and Val really stepped it up for us."
Ferreira finished with 15 kills for the second straight night on 32 attacks with two errors for a .400 hitting percentage. Caboclo had seven kills on 18 swings without an error for a .389 percentage.
Erica Chimak chipped in eight kills and Judith Boel six. Daianarah Bracero had 36 assists for the second straight night.
Defensively, Ferreira had 14 digs and Chimak and Rafaella Dornelas 10 each.
The Scorpions were big on the block again, with four solo blocks and 10 assisted blocks total.
With nine kills in the first set, Bracero went over the 3,000 assist record for her career. In two seasons with the Scorpions, she has 3,027 assists and counting and is the all-time Scorpion leader in that category.
Lowery realizes that the Scorpions have a major challenge Thursday against Concordia, but likes his team's chances.
"We need to clean up our serves a little bit, but if we play like we did tonight with this kind of effort, Concordia will play really well to beat us," Lowery said. "It should be a great match."
