UTB/TSC Volleyball Team Announces 2009 Schedule
Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 3:00 PM - [Volleyball]

The UTB/TSC volleyball team has announced its 2009 schedule, and this season's slate of games will pressure the Scorpions to play well early in the season.

UTB/TSC will begin the season by hosting newly added Red River Athletic Conference foe Our Lady of the Lake University at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22 in the Garza Gymnasium on UTB/TSC campus. The match is part of a doubleheader, as the Scorpions will face Embry Riddle University at 7 p.m.

After beginning the season at home the Scorpions will be challenged on the road in two early season tournaments. The team will first face four quality opponents at the Savannah College of Art Design Tournament in Savannah, Ga., Aug. 28-29.

"We feel that we have put together a very tough non-conference schedule starting the second week of the season in Savannah," UTB/TSC first-year head volleyball coach Todd Lowery said. "We will face Georgetown (College, Ky.) which finished 2008 ranked No. 6 in the country and finished strong at the national tournament. I would expect them to start the season ranked No. 5 or No. 6. We will also face (University of) Mobile which finished 2008 ranked in the Top 20 as well. Then we play Savannah which is always a tough game in their own gym and Ursuline College (Ohio)."

After the SCAD Tournament, the Scorpions will travel to Edinburg to face Valley rival University of Texas-Pan American. Lowery said the chance to play a NCAA Division I opponent presents a unique opportunity for the Scorpions.

The Scorpions will follow that challenge with another just as daunting. The team will face four quality squads, including perennial power Madonna University at the Madonna University Tournament in Livionia, Mich., Sept. 11-12. The match against Madonna will be the second in UTB/TSC history. The last time the two teams met the Scorpions eliminated Madonna in the 2007 NAIA National Tournament.

"This will again let us know how we stand on the national stage," Lowery said. "Madonna is a perennial Top 10 NAIA school and finished last season ranked No. 11. Madonna always has a great team. If you can compete with them, you know you can compete with everybody else in the country.

After a grueling non-conference schedule, the Scorpions will begin conference play at home against Our Lady of the Lake University at 3 p.m. Sept. 19 and will face conference opponent Huston-Tillotson University at home at 1 p.m. Sept. 20. Lowery said that the RRAC should be strong but expects a few teams stick out above the rest.

"I would say that Wiley College has to be a favorite," Lowery said. "They won the conference last year and return all of their starters. Texas Wesleyan added a number of good recruits to an already strong team and I expect them to be right at the top of the conference as well."

With the 2009 season Lowery said he is anticipating beginning his first season as Scorpion head coach.

"I'm very excited to get started. We have some rebuilding to do after last season, but we are setting our sights on trying to win the conference and qualifying for nationals," Lowery said.
