UTB/TSC Women's Soccer Team Announces 2009 Schedule
Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 8:30 AM - [Women's Soccer]

The UTB/TSC women's soccer team has announced its 2009 schedule as the squad prepares to attempt to win its second consecutive Red River Athletic Conference championship and reach the NAIA National Tournament.

The Scorpion soccer team will be challenged this season with difficult non-conference games against quality opponents such as NCAA Division I squads Centenary College and Texas Southern University and NCAA Division II teams Angelo State University, Abilene Christian University and Texas A&M International University. This season will be the third meeting between the Scorpions and Texas A&M International. The Scorpions' 2007 win against TAMIU marked the program's first victory.

"The schedule we have put together is extremely competitive and we will be playing some very tough opponents especially on the road," Barjaktarevic said. "This should ultimately be a really good test and preparation for the postseason. We have a mix of mostly (NCAA) Division I and Division II teams for our non-conference schedule and it will give us a feel of how we compare and where we are really early in season. Everyone is excited for this opportunity."
The Scorpions will begin the 2009 season by playing in the Soccer for a Cure/Friendly Soccer Classic against the Celtics club team at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21 at the REK Soccer Field on UTB/TSC campus. This will be the first game the Scorpions have played at the REK Center Field after playing the previous two seasons at Morningside Park. The team will continue play in the tournament at 3 p.m. Sunday Aug. 23 against Tec De Monterey.
"The Soccer for a Cure Tournament is for a great cause and I hope to have it as an annual event," Barjaktarevic said. "We will have the Tec De Monterrey University team as well as two great local club teams: the Harlingen Celtics and McAllen Border Bandits. We have great relationships with all three teams and it will be a true test before we start with regular season. This will also be a great test of our new facility here at the REK Center Field and it will be amazing to finally play on campus. Morningside Park was a great home for us the past two years with a lot of fan support and great atmosphere so imagine how it will be on campus."
UTB/TSC will begin regular season play on the road against Louisiana State University Shreveport Friday, Sept. 4 and will begin Red River Athletic Conference play Oct. 3 against newly added conference member Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio.
The Scorpions will be looking to win the RRAC championship for the second time in school history this season and win the RRAC Tournament for the first time since 2007 when the team reached the NAIA Region VI first-round playoffs. Coach Nik Barjaktarevic said the conference schedule should present a challenge but the team will be up to the task.
"The RRAC is getting better each year as a conference and it will again be a challenge," Barjaktarevic said. "We added OLLU and after playing them last year and it is becoming a great rivalry. Texas Wesleyan and Northwood will be tough teams to beat and I can see a few more teams stepping up and making things interesting this year. I'm sure that whoever wins the RRAC Tournament will be a great representative for our conference at the national level."
The Scorpions will be playing four regular season home games this season. Home opponents this season include Texas Southern University, Northwood University, Texas College and Bacone College.
"The Fall 2009 season is coming soon and we will be ready," Barjaktarevic said. "We are really confident in the group of student athletes we have on the team and can't wait to get to work."
