Harlingen – United League Baseball’s Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings announced that they signed right-handed pitcher Jose Cordero today shortly before the deadline for finalizing league rosters.
Cordero will start tomorrow’s series-finale with his former team, the Laredo Broncos, at 7:35 p.m. at Veterans Field.
Cordero pitched for the Broncos in 2007 and 2008. In 2007, he was 6-6 with a 5.74 ERA. In 19 games (17 starts), he pitched 106.2 innings, allowing 121 hits and 67 walks while striking out 121. He finished up the season with Sioux City (American Association), pitching in three games.
Cordero returned to the Broncos for one games in last year, giving up seven runs (six earned) in 2.1 innings before moving onto Grand Prairie (American Association), where he went 4-4 with a 4.73 ERA. In 23 games (10 starts), he pitched 67 innings, allowing 72 hits and 31 walks while striking out 34.
Cordero open this season with Grand Prairie and was released after giving up 10 runs (seven earned) in 6.2 innings during a relief appearance on August 15. Overall, Cordero was 4-5 with a 4.92 ERA. In 25 games (nine starts), he pitched 89.2 innings, allowing 102 hits and 41 walks while striking out 51.
The WhiteWings’ active roster now stands at 22. They have one inactive player, Jesus Sanchez, who has returned to the Dominican Republic due to a family emergency.
