HIDALGO, TEXAS --- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League (CHL) today announced that right wing Zak McClellan has signed with the team for the 2009-10 season.

McClellan, 26, was one of six Killer Bees to play in all 64 regular season games in 2008-09. In his rookie pro season, the Frankenmuth, Mich., native finished tied for fifth in team scoring (11-26-37).

“I can’t wait for the season to get started,” McClellan said. “I’m looking forward to producing, helping the team as much as I can and hopefully have more of an impact.”

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound winger saw considerable time on the penalty killing unit and against opposing team’s top lines and helped the Killer Bees finish fourth in the CHL in penalty-killing percentage (84.47%). McClellan finished the season as the Killer Bees’ active shorthanded goals leader (three) and was fifth in plus-minus (plus-7). He also collected 10 points (3-7-10) on the power play.

Highlights from his rookie season include scoring the shootout game-winning goal on October 24 vs. Rapid City and scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory vs. Laredo on Dec. 22. He collected a personal-best three assists (0-3-3) in a 4-2 win over Corpus Christi on January 9.

“Zak is a great character kid that is extremely excited to be back,” Killer Bees head Coach Chris Brooks explained. “I am even more excited to have him back. He works extremely hard every day and every shift and is a great locker room guy. I expect him to set the standard of expectation on work ethic and expect Zak to start off where he left off last season.”

The Killer Bees return to Dodge Arena ice this October for their seventh season in the CHL. Season tickets are available now by calling 956-843-PUCK (7825).
