RIO GRANDE CITY, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — On Friday, two rival Valley teams each received scholarship money before kickoff.
"It's the battle of the county tonight!" said Rio Grande City principal Adolfo Pena Jr.
But before the battle could commence, both Starr County rival teams were awarded $1000 scholarship checks as part of the City Clash Game of the Week.
"This week we picked Rio Grande City and Roma, which is pretty close," said Mark Payne of Payne Auto Group. " Which is why I'm wearing red because we support both schools proudly. And I think it's really important that we continue to support education and our kids and help them in the future, so I think it's great to keep that cycle going."
The Rio Grande City Rattlers and the Roma Gladiators faced off for bragging rights in this year's Starr County rivalry game, but both schools can boast proudly about the new scholarship funds for their students.
"We'll give out our scholarships come March in the spring, and students will be able to apply for it," said Pena. "Thank you very much for donating a thousand dollars to add to our scholarships that we give out at the high school every year."
Roma High School principal Noe Muniz Jr. also expressed his excitement and gratitude on behalf of the school.
"This one thousand dollars is going to be used for a student's education, and we want to thank the Payne Auto Group for such a generous contribution to our students," Muniz said. "From all the Gladiators, thank you very very much!"
Despite winning only one game last season, Rio Grande City is now undefeated in district play after shutting down the Gladiators in a 41-7 win on Friday. Roma struck first with an early touchdown, but the Rattlers took control of the rest of the game and kept the Gladiators off the board after their first trip to the end zone.
Congratulations to both teams in this week's City Clash Game of the Week.
