HS Fever: District Projections / Playoff Predictions

UPDATED: Thursday, February 25, 2010 - 12:33pm

District Predictions

30-5A
1. Sharyland (7-0)
2. McAllen Memorial (6-1)
3. McAllen High (5-2)
4. Rio Grande City (4-3)
5. Donna (2-5)
6. McAllen Rowe (2-5)
7. La Joya (2-5)
8. Palmview (0-7)
NOTES
This will be a fun race for the 4-7 spot. Rio Grande City benefits by hosting Donna in week 8 (that game could determine the final playoff spot in the district). The RGC could start 0-3, but roll off 4 straight to make the post-season. Sharyland will be looking for redemption from last year’s loss to eventual district champ McAllen Memorial, so look for their week 9 pairing to be for the 2009 crown.
-------------------------------------------
31-5A
1. Harlingen (7-0)
2. PSJA North (6-1)
3. PSJA Memorial (4-3)
4. Edinburg (4-3)
5. Edinburg North (4-3)
6. PSJA High (3-4)
7. Economedes (1-6)
8. Harlingen South (0-7)
NOTES
Harlingen should win this district, and PSJA North’s lone loss should come against Harlingen (the Cards will remember what happened on Halloween last year). After that, it’s a free-for-all between the Wolverines, Bobcats, and Cougars. PSJA Memorial could easily begin district with three straight losses, but rebound to finish with four wins in a row. PSJA High may get wins against the Wolverines, Bobcats, and/or Cougars, but still MISS the post-season.
-------------------------
32-5A
1. Los Fresnos (6-1)
2. Pace (6-1)
3. Hanna (5-2)
4. San Benito (4-3)
5. Weslaco (4-3)
6. Lopez (2-5)
7. Porter (1-6)
8. Rivera (0-7)
NOTES
Los Fresnos needs to hold onto leads in order to remain district king. Falcons may get first district loss in what seems forever.
Pace and Los Fresnos meeting in week 8 should decide district champ. Vikings also need to watch out for upset alerts.
Hanna will surprise casual Valley football fans. The offense is explosive, but will the Eagles be able to live up to the pressure?
San Benito could be tied for the district lead three weeks into play, but the Greyhounds will need to finish strong against Los Fresnos, Weslaco, Pace and Rivera to make the post-season.
Weslaco could easily start district 0-3, but don’t be surprised if coach Villarreal rallies his troops to mark off 4 straight wins to end the season. Will it be enough? Week 8 against San Benito may be for the final playoff spot.

----------------------------------------------------
32-4A
1. Weslaco East (6-1)
2. Mission (6-1)
3. Mercedes (5-2)
4. Edcouch-Elsa (5-2)
5. Mission Veterans (3-4)
6. Juarez-Lincoln (2-5)
7. Valley View (1-6)
8. Roma (0-7)
NOTES
Wow was this district tough to pick. I have upsets galore in here, just because of the complete uncertainty that comes with these matchups. Edcouch-Elsa, despite being injured and young has the EASIEST schedule of the bunch and that makes them dangerous. The week 9 matchups between Weslaco East and Mission may decide the district, but the league opener with Mercedes at Mission is just as important. Watch for the Patriots or Juarez-Lincoln to play spoiler at the most unexpected time in 2009.
--------------------------------------------
32-3A
1. Lyford (7-0)
2. Port Isabel (6-1)
3. Rio Hondo (4-3)
4. Raymondville (4-3)
5. Hidalgo (3-4)
6. Zapata (3-4)
7. La Feria (1-6)
8. Progreso (0-7)
NOTES
Lyford at Port Isabel in week 6 likely will decide district champ.
Rio Hondo winning 3 of last 4 to finish 4-3.
Port Isabel rolling of 4 straight to end regular season to finish at 6-1.
La Feria bubble team, in danger of going 1-6, but could finish high as 4-3.
Raymondville could easily start district 3-0, but rough finish may have them at 4-3.
Progreso has best chance as going winless in this district, but will have opportunities.
