San Benito police say Friday evening on the 600 block of Freddy Fender Lane a six year old was playing outside when he found what he thought was a toy gun on the ground but
it turned out to be a loaded handgun .

"The child picked up the gun and then immediately showed it to the parents, the parents took the weapon away from the child and called the police."

Police say the gun was reported stolen out of Dallas.
Police believe a suspect who was involved in a crime the night before a block away was in possession of the gun.

"There was an aggravated assault that happened at the intersection of Francisco Moreno, Freddy Fender, and Rescea lane, in the incident a female was stabbed in the leg and another subject was also assaulted."

Police have several people in custody from the aggravated assault.

As the for the six year old boy he was not hurt but police have this important message.

"We tell the children at very young age if they come across a weapon, we tell them to stay away, do not touch and notify their parents."
