MCALLEN - Farmers Insurance is ranking the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area as the 11th securest place to live in the country.
The study looks at a lot of factors when ranking cities, including crime statistics, risk of natural disasters, job loss, life expectancy and extreme weather.
The McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area was judged in the larges metro area category, competing with cities like El Paso, Pittsburg and Austin.
But even with the close proximity to border crime, McAllen officials said they aren't surprised with the high ranking.
"We've been telling that story year after year in terms of our crime rate and how safe the city is, and really how safe the region is, it continues to be a really safe area when you compare it to some of the larger communities in the country. Unfortunately we get kind of a bad wrap with the things that are happening in Mexico.," said Steve Ahlenius, McAllen Chamber of Commerce President.
