Kentucky Man accused of torturing and killing cats adopted off of Craigslist.
A Kentucky man is facing animal abuse charges after allegedly torturing and killing four cats, and investigators say many more animals may have been killed.
24-year old Alex Phelps went before a judge in Louisville on Friday.
Phelps was arraigned on four counts of torturing a cat.
Judge Donald Armstrong entered a plea of not guilty for Phelps and set his bond at $50,000.
Over the past month three cats were found mutilated and tortured to death in Louisville.
Phelps may have gotten some of those cats from a Craigslist ad.
A few months ago, Jennifer Chappell says she rescued three kittens.
Chappell says after caring for them and getting them proper veterinary care she wanted to find them a good home.
"I bottle fed these kittens," said Chappell. "They went in a laundry basket everyday with me to work. They were sleeping on down comforters, they had the life of luxury."
Chappell says after caring and loving for the kittens she posted an ad on Craigslist and Alex Phelps responded to the ad.
Chappell even shared an email that Phelps wrote her, saying he has a dog and most of his family are "avid animal lovers".
Chappell says Phelps came to her home and she gave him the kittens in October.
"He took them and I thought they would have a good home and he realLy talked it up like they would," said Chappell. "He seemed like a cat lover."
Chappell says she had heard on the news that cats were found mutilated and tortured to death in the area of Preston Highway and Mud Lane.
On Thursday police arrested Phelps and charged him with four counts of torturing and killing cats.
Police say Phelps confessed to stabbing and killing the animals using a sharp knife.
"I actually saw it on someone's Facebook last night and I was cheering YAY! that they caught the sicko then, as soon as I saw his name, I said OH NO!," said Chappell.
Detectives at the Bullitt County Sheriff's office say they did find two skeletal remains believed to be cats in the back of Phelps home.
Neighbors say there have been cats in the neighborhood that have recently disappeared.
The Bullitt County Sheriff's office also says they found a cat on Christmas Eve at the Corner of Blue Lick and Dean Street that was bound and tortured, much like the ones in Louisville.
Now, Chappell says she is worried and fears the worst for the innocent kittens she handed over to Phelps.
"They are loving, they don't have a mean bone in their body," said Chappell. "They are an extension of me, I feel like he killed a part of me. And that sounds ridiculous but, they were my kittens."
The skeletal remains found in Phelps back yard are being turned over to the medical examiners office.
The Bullitt County Sheriff's office plans on filing charges against Phelps next week.
They also believe there may be more cats that were killed.

Judge Armstrong also ordered Phelps to stay away from any animals in the event he can post bond.
Phelps plans to hire his own attorney by the time he's due back in court on January 10th.
