HARGILL- Fire investigators are trying to figure out what ignited a fire inside two empty Hargill homes. According to firefighters, the house went up in flames early Wednesday morning off Highway 490.
Ashes is what's left of this home, Monte Alto's Fire Department came Wednesday to extinguish a small blaze still burning at the scene. Monte Alto Fire Chief David Garcia told News Center 23 that no one was inside the home because it's been vacant after an elderly couple died. The home was being maintained by a family member. Hidalgo County Fire Marshal Juan Martinez says the cause of the blaze is being investigated.
"Our job is to rule everything as arson until proven otherwise," said Martinez.
Another fire started at a home on fourth street, just a few blocks behind the other home. That home is also abandoned and smoke stains are visible on the house.
the owner of the first home told News Center 23 that looters have broken into the homes possibly used drugs.
