Eighty out of every 100 people you see on the streets of Brownsville are overweight or obese.
In a city where these startling numbers rival some of the highest in the nation, there's a real urgency to get people here in the community up and moving.
The third round of the Brownsville's "Biggest Loser" Challenge is on...
Tuesday the City of Brownsville and the UT School of Public Health announced the kick off of the mega weight loss competition.
But the goal is not only to inspire those to lose the weight, but more importantly to encourage people to make lifestyle changes.
"It's a way of life that's the challenge, it's not about being perfect but about maintaining those active living lifestyle and healthy eating options." said Dr. Rose Gowen, Brownsville City Commissioner.
According to medical professionals backing the challenge, over-all wellness and losing weight will reduce the risk of certain types of cancers, heart disease and diabetes, a predominate disease in the valley.
There are also financial benefits to dropping the weight.
"A person of average income would be able to save $800 a year if they were not diabetic." Dr. Gowen added.
You don't have to be overweight take part, those of normal weight are encouraged to jump in and get healthy.
While losing the extra, unhealthy pounds will be reward enough for many participants, cash prizes are also up for grabs.
The first weighs-ins will be held the weekend of January 7th and 8th at Gonzalez Park, 34 Tony Gonzalez St. in the gym from 5-8pm.
