Many home remedies work...and can save you a trip to the doctor's office.
Do you have allergies, achy joints or acne?
They're all common conditions that account for thousands of doctors visits every year.
Now some doctors say you may be able to skip the office visit and try treating yourself with some good old-fashioned home remedies first.
Experts at the Mayo Clinic say you don't need to leave your own home to treat many of life's aches and pains.
"If it's simple and not causing you distress, you can try some measures at home for a couple of weeks," says Dr. Philip Hagen, editor-in-chief of the Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies.
For example, use a neti pot to treat symptoms of the common cold and heat up some chicken noodle soup.
A homemade saltwater solution may help you avoid a cold all together.
One study found people who gargled daily with water had half the colds of people who didn't.
For frequent headaches, try rubbing peppermint oil on your temples.
Even warts can sometimes be treated at home.
"Cut a piece of duct tape as big as the wart, you leave it on for six days, then take it off on the sixth day, then soak it for 15-20 minutes," advises Dr. Hagen.
Experts say this isn't a prescription for cutting out the doctor all together.
Some patients may need to worry about drug interactions, and if your home remedy hasn't helped for two weeks, it might be time to make time for the doctor.
