South Padre Island is known for its beautiful beach and breath taking beach front properties...
And town officials here want to keep it that way... Hurricanes in the past have completely eroded major areas on the island...
In order to protect public and beach front properties... Officials have made sand dunes a top priority..
Even though hurricane season begins in June... Coastal officials work year round to make sure they are prepared to protect the island..
This week town officials approved a major project that will help create sand dunes...
Officials tell us that because of how the island is shaped...the northern side of the island has trouble replenishing itself...
With this new project over 4,000 cubic yards of sand from the south side of the island will be moved to the northern side... In hopes that sand dunes will form and protect against high tides and major storms... Officials hope the plan will help the area for years to come...
