Federal government announces first civil suit against companies involved in BP spill.
The federal government has announced the first civil lawsuits against the companies involved in the gulf oil spill.
The Justice Department is suing BP and eight other companies involved in the disaster.
The civil lawsuits are an effort to recover billions of dollars from the country's largest ever offshore oil spill.
The suits allege that safety and operating regulations were violated before april 20th.
"We intend to prove these violations caused or contributed to the massive oil spill," said US Attorney General Eric Holder.
The Obama administration's lawsuits ask that the companies be held liable without limitation for all removal costs and damages caused by the spill.
The lawsuits also state the amount of damages and the extent of injuries sustained by the United States as a result of the Deepwater Horizon spill are not yet fully known.
