Harlingen police sending this message to be extremely cautious about a phone scam. Police say a person will call a family and claim that the family's relative is in Mexico or Canada and they need financial help.
Harlingen police say recently citizens of the area have been receiving telephone calls in reference to a family member in Mexico or in Canada in need of financial assistance. The caller usually requests that the money is wired to a bank or similar entity, so that the family member can retrieve it. Police say they also text and email.
Lee Rodriguez is a Harlingen resident who says her friend and family have been contacted by these people.
"My friend said they called her to ask if she has relatives in Mexico and said no I don't no relatives in Mexico."
