Lower Valley residents are sending festive care packages to the 370th Transportation Company in Iraq.
With the holiday's approaching, Lower Valley residents are sending festive care packages to the 370th Transportation Company currently serving in Iraq.
Volunteers from the American Legion #439 in La Feria have been collecting donated items from local businesses and patrons.
Each volunteer personally packed several large ziploc bags with a variety of items. All the volunteers signed cards thanking the soldiers for their service and then slipped the cards into the gift packages.
Those volunteering said they want the troops to know they will be sorely miss over the holiday.
"These packages are going to my brothers unit in Iraq, his name is Nick and that's why I am helping out," said James Counelis, Volunteer.
"We've had soldiers come back from Iraq and I talk to them and that's what made me go ahead and do it," said Karen Gay, Volunteer.
"Around this time of year, Christmas, the soldiers are missing their families and all that so we though a little bit of home over there would be nice," Rudy Garza, Volunteer.
In total, the volunteers packed 51 care packages containing both food and small necessities like toothbrushes and deodorant.
