Salinas Elementary School Wins 2010 Recycling School of the Year.

Three school districts competed all year to find out which school is the best at recycling.

Students across the Upper Valley have been competing all year for the title of Best Recycling Program and the city of Alton has named the winner.

Salinas Elementary School in Mission took the award this year with their students use of easily accessible recycling boxes around the school.

Every Friday students help load a week's work of collected paper, plastic, cardboard and aluminum into the Alton Public Works Recycling Trucks.

The competition is set up to help students become aware of the environment and how to keep the world clean.

Even though every student did a great job, one student stood out from the rest.

"Let's all recycle everyday so we can make a difference in our world," said Brandon Orrego, 2010 Best recycling Student.

The program is funded by the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality and the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council.

Schools in the Consolidated Independent School District, the La Joya School District and the McAllen Independent School District all competed throughout the year.
