A young man involved in a drug smuggling attempt by the river faced several charges on Friday including murder.
Fernando Cuevas Camacho, 18 years-old, is charged with felony evading, felony possession of marijuana and murder. Camacho drove his car into the river on Thursday after police saw him and another suspect loading over 400 pounds of marijuana into the vehicle.
Border agents pulled Camacho out of the river after he jumped from the car but the other suspect, 17 year-old Mario Alberto Gonzalez Cruz, drowned during the incident. Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino says Camacho is responsible for the other suspects death.
Cruz was a Mexican national and had been deported twice before in the past and Camacho's bail was set at more than $2 million dollars.
