Pope Benedict blessed patients at a hospital in central Itlay on Monday.
It marked the 70th Anniversary of the start of the second world war and said religion should promote peace and fight racism. He said the war should serve as a warning to never repeat such a barbarity as the Holocaust and the extermination of millions of innocent people. The 82 year-old Pope has frequently spoken out about the horrors of the second world war and as a youth, the German born Pope was forced to serve in the Hitler youth corps and German army before he deserted at the end of the war.
