Wednesday the first reading was approved to continue a juvenile curfew in the city of Harlingen. In three years of the ordinance being in place since 2008 Harlingen police chief Daniel Castillo says there is a drop in juvenile crime including gang related activities, assaults, graffiti spraying, and other crimes.
"What we have been able to identify is that 44% drop in juvenile arrests."
Under the ordinance juveniles are not allowed to be out from 10:30pm-6am Sunday through Thursday and on the weekends 12am-6am. Under this new ordinance there are some changes from the current ordinance, instead of two warnings a citation will be given the first time.
The ordinance has to go through one more reading before being passed.
