Maryland woman celebrates her birthday...and completion of four college courses.
A Maryland woman who has completed four college courses in the last few years celebrated a milestone Tuesday: her 100th birthday.
Myrtle Berglund said she loves to spend time with her friends at the Arnold Senior Center.
For her 100th birthday, she was showered with gifts, citations and a letter from the White House.
"It's unbelievable. The Lord has been so good to me and given me this long life, and I've made so many friends. They are so precious to me," Berglund said. "It's been such a wonderful year. It isn't one day, it's every day that's been so wonderful, and this is a climax to such a wonderful walk with the Lord for 100 years."
"She's a woman that has a smile on her face, no matter what," said her friend, Jean Prendkin.
Berglund's family agreed.
"She use to come and get me up in the morning, and we'd go do things together, even when I was an infant. She's fantastic," said Berglund's niece, Christine Thomas.
"She is so special because she remembers everybody by name. She knows what they like, and she picks out special gifts for them that are just for them," said her nephew, Paul Johanson.
She's also made time for herself, taking four classes at Anne Arundel Community College.
"I think that the one that I had the most enjoyment out of was the ceramic course, and the next would be quilting. I've done a lot of the hand quilting courses," she said.
Berglund said she is currently taking a break from classes but plans to take another course or two in the spring.
