Patriotism is alive and well in the Rio Grande Valley as hundreds gathered on Thursday morning to remember all veterans, those who lost their lives, those who survived and those who are still fighting for our freedom.
The ceremony included a fly over salute, a visit from the mayor and speeches from veterans young and old. Over a month ago, President Obama signed the Veterans Benefits Act of 2010. The law was created to improve benefits for veterans such as employment opportunities, protecting service members and addressing the needs of disabled and homeless veterans. Veterans and family members hope to see more changes here in the Valley.
The City of McAllen is planning to expand the Veterans War Memorial within the next few years, to continue to honor the 1.3 million Americans lost in U.S. wars.
