After formally being indicted this morning, the Mayor turned himself in to sheriff deputies at the Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito for booking, where he was photographed and fingerprinted.
“I expected to be indicted because if it had been anything else, it would've looked like maybe I did something or arrange or use my influence which I haven't in anything.”
A Cameron County Grand Jury indicted Ahumada and charged him with Abuse of Official Capacity, Misapplication of Fiduciary Property and Theft. Basically, the indictment accuses the Mayor of stealing a $26,000 city check, made payable to a vendor in New York. But instead of going to the vendor, it went into Ahumada's bank account on October 28th.
“I can look at anyone in the eye. I’m not afraid. I know I’ve done nothing wrong.”
Ahumada was released from the detention center this afternoon after posting a $15,000 bond.
A date for trial has not been set yet. If convicted, the Mayor can be looking at jail and possibly prison time.
