Hurricane season is two months away, but on Tuesday emergency managers and hurricane experts from all over the country started planning in Austin.
The Austin Convention Center is hosting a national hurricane conference and it offered training sessions and workshops through Friday. The event is designed to help planning for hurricanes and to create strategies to improve handling their aftermath. Researchers at Colorado State announced that they expect an average hurricane season for the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.
The average is 12 named storms and 6 hurricanes which is a scale back from their earlier prediction on this year's hurricane season. Researcher William Gray says the forecast is dialed down because of improved chances at El Nino conditions, which suppress hurricane formation.
Hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th.
