Team of Kentucky doctors Twitter as they perform double hand transplant.
Surgeons in Kentucky have given a man two new hands, and tweeted updates throughout the operation.
The operation at Jewish Hospital in Louisville started Tuesday and wrapped up on Wednesday.
Updates were posted on Twitter as the surgery progressed.
The patient lost the use of his hands after being badly burned.
They were still attached when he went to the surgeons about the transplant.
"He is the first person who came in with hands present saying 'You know, I'd rather have an amputation than continue to live this way'," said lead surgeon Dr. Warren Breidenbach.
The surgery was was the third double-hand transplant performed in the United States.
