It's a simple task, but for Brenda Gomez and her 4 year-old son, the event turned tragic. Brownsville police responded to a call over the weekend and when they arrived they found an injured child lying in a ditch near a mailbox and the mother dead on the scene.
The two had crossed the street to check the mail when an alleged drunk driver, Edgar Reyes, came barreling down South Indiana road. Police say the child was thrown from the mothers arms when she was hit and landed in this ditch, but before striking the two pedestrians, Reyes had another collision just seconds before with a VW Jetta.
The woman in the Jetta was turning into a nearby driveway when she was hit and had to be transported to the hospital by a family member. Police say Reyes continued down the road where he then struck the mother and child. Police say that's when Reyes and two other suspects exited the truck and fled the scene without rendering aid to the mother and child. Police searched the truck and found information which lead to the arrest of Reyes who later confessed to being the driver of the truck.
Reyes was given a $300,000 dollar bond and police are considering to see if charges will be filed on the other two passengers.
