Deputies picked up two people and are questioning them in this morning's shooting near Palmview. The shooting killed an irrigation worker after a botched robbery. Hidalgo County Sheriff, Lupe Treviño, says one has confessed to the murder of 63-year-old, Walester Cerda.
Cerda and another field worker were approached by two men who attempted to rob the workers, but when Cerda tried to fight back, he was shot to death. Both workers were working in an orchard field located on E. Goodwin Road, across from Rio Queen Citrus Incorporated in Hidalgo County. According to the sheriff's department, two males, a 16 and a 17-year-old, walked up to the workers around 6:30 this morning and demanded money from Cerda!
“The irrigation worker retaliated, took a swing at him with a machete which resulted in one of the robbers shooting the worker.”
Sheriff Treviño says the man was shot once in the chest and killed almost instantly. Shortly after the shooting, both men fled and drove off south bound in a light blue minivan, leaving tire marks on the road. Detectives closed off and surrounded the area with crime tape for any other possible clues that may lead to the gunmen. Treviño believes the suspects were involved in another robbery which occurred about 20 minutes before the shooting.
“A school age young man was confronted at a bus stop by 2 individuals also armed with handguns.”
Sheriff Deputies arrested the men late this afternoon. They will be formally charged tomorrow.
