Ricardo Vargas was an interpreter for the Brownsville Independent School District. He worked with many students who had difficulty hearing. But in April 2007, a 14-year-old boy accused Vargas of fondling and committing sexual acts on three different occasions. During today’s trial, the defense called for several witnesses to testify in favor of Vargas. Juan Pratt was one of them.
“He’s completely innocent. I’ve known him and he's not guilty.”
Vargas has been charged with 3 counts of indecency with a child, 2 counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and a count of criminal solicitation of a minor.
“That’s a second degree felony. The punishment range for those charges is 2-20 years and $10,000 fine.”
the victim alleges he spent the night at Vargas' home on several occasions and in the month of April 2007, he said Vargas touched him, performed oral sex and made the boy reciprocate the act.
Vargas resigned from his position in July 2007. The jury deliberated this afternoon but couldn't come to a decision today. They will resume tomorrow morning.
