Texas State Representative Tara Rios will be allowed to continue treating Medicaid patients at her office after a federal judge ruled on Tuesday.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Dorina Ramos made her ruling on Tuesday evening as she told the defendants she would after a hearing was held in her courtroom. During the hearing, the judge heard testimony from the defendant's lawyers stating that 80% of Rios patients are Medicaid recipients and denying her treating those patients would be an injustice to the community.
The prosecution argued that an injustice had already been committed on those Medicaid patients, who she said, are grateful for the government assistance they receive. Judge Ramos did rule that Rios and the other four dentist could not refer any patients to oral surgeon Dr. Schwarz.
