The Brownsville/South Padre Island International Airport celebrated it's 80th Anniversary on Monday afternoon.
Airport officials as well as city and state representatives gathered to celebrate 80 years of service and honor Amelia Earhart. The city renamed the street in front of the airport to Amelia Earhart drive. Ms. Earhart learned to fly and in fact earned her pilot's license at the airport.
Officials say the fast growing airport owes much of its success to their partnership with Continental Airlines and has grown from just 3 daily flights in 2004 to 7 or 8 flights this year.
