The National Weather Service recognized the City of Brownsville as a Storm Ready Community.
In order to be recognized as a Storm Ready Community, Brownsville needed to have a 24 hour warning point and an Emergency Operations Center. Also, continuing public education programs and local plans. NOAA's Storm Ready Program started 10 years ago and has recognized more than 1,400 cities in the United States.
Brownsville becomes the 51st city in Texas to receive the recognition and the third in the Rio Grande Valley. The other two cities are Weslaco and South Padre Island in 2006.
