IDEA Public Schools will host its 4th Annual Carpe Diem Gala and Auction at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 20. The event helps raise funds to support college field lessons for IDEA students.
“We are extremely excited to gather our friends and supporters again to celebrate IDEA students’ success and to help make the dream of college a reality for our student in the Rio Grande Valley,” said Tom Torkelson, IDEA Public Schools Founder & CEO.
The college field lessons are a unique curriculum that allows students to visit college campuses and experience college life firsthand. Last spring, over 1,500 middle and high school students visited colleges and universities across the nation.
“All of our students went with a similar goal in mind: to set foot on their future alma mater,” Torkelson said. “By the time our students graduate from IDEA, they will have visited approximately 25 colleges or universities to learn what it takes to be successful in college.”
Between 6th and 11th grade, it costs IDEA Public Schools approximately $2,000 to send each student on the trips.
The event will take place at Mario’s Banquet & Conference Center in Mission, TX, and will include a seated dinner, presentations by IDEA students and leaders, and a silent and live auction. It is sponsored, in part, by IBC Bank, RW Baird, MorganStanley SmithBarney, News Talk 710 KURV, Entravision Communications, Lamar, The Town Crier, The Bargain Book, Sylvan Learning Center and Wells Fargo Bank.
